Wiltshire has played a significant role in the history of this region. Wilton, near Salisbury, was once the "heade town of Wessex and Wileshire" and it is said that the county originally grew out of Wilton. The nearby village of Old Sarum has also played a significant role in the county's history, being popular with both the Saxons and the Normans. It was also the site of the original Cathedral in the southern part of Wiltshire, preceeding Salisbury Cathedral.

The county has been host to a number of notable battles, including Alfred`s defeat of the Danes at Ethandune where despite tremendous odds and a seamingly impregnable hill-fort, he used all his guile and cunning to win a famous victory. The civil war battle of Roundway Hill near Devizes also figures prominantly in history.

In more recent times, the county, especially Trowbridge in the west, was renowned the world over for its quality woollen products.Alas, all mills are now confined to memory and text, although Trowbridge now hosts a museum where details of this aspect of the county's past can be explored.
Swindon, which means 'pig hill' to the north, was once the centre of Brunel's Great Western Railway and until quite modern times produced trains and rolling stock for British Railways. Sadly, this trade has also been lost but Swindon now boasts a number of hi-tech industries and the GWR name lives on, albeit in the form of an extremely popular commercial radio station

An evening with

Henry Blofeld

Henry Blofeld's broadcasting career began at the start of the seventies and in 1972 he joined BBC's Test Match Special for two of the one-day matches against Australia. He has been a regular member of this famous commentary team ever since and after the departure of John Arlott and Brian Johnston, has become the great character of the show. His rich, plummy tones are known and loved worldwide for he has done much commentary on both television and radio while covering cricket overseas. 'Blowers' as he is fondly known, has a tremendous zest for life; his broadcasts are always lively and full of humour and he is famous for the way in which he paints the picture for listeners omitting no detail, down to the pigeons, aeroplanes, red buses and helicopters. And in his one-man show he tells uproarious stories from the commentary box as well as others about his wide circle of friends who range from Dad's Army's Clive Dunn through Noel Coward and Ian Fleming who pinched his name for James Bond's arch enemy, and onto the blind pianist, George Shearing. Anyone who has been to one of these shows will know just how funny he is! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see and hear one of sport’s best loved personalities. Catch up with him in Wessex and The South.  Dates are as follows

Avebury Stone Circles
Avebury, which is one of the largest and most impressive of the ritual 'Henge Monuments' in Britain, was built in the Late Neolithic period. It consists of a massive, roughly circular earthwork, enclosing an area of about 28 and a half acres. Around the inner edge of the ditch was, originally, a ring of 98 large upright sarsens set at intervals of 36 feet. Within it stood an upright monolith ('The Obelisk') and an irregular line of 12 smaller stones.
Many stones were damaged or buried during medieval times and others were broken up and used for building work in the 18th century. Today, the stones, bank and ditch can all be explored.

Bradford-on-Avon

Bradford on Avon is a bustling market town which still serves the local farming community as it has done for centuries.
Nestling in the western corner of Wiltshire,Bradford is only 8 miles from the World Heritage City of Bath. One of the most compelling features about Bradford is its unique position on the edge of the Cotswolds facing the River Avon. The ancient bridge in the centre of the town remains its natural focus and still retains two of its original 13th century arches. The historical view from the main bridge incoporates the hill above the town which is dotted with the old weavers' cottages and the river bank flanked with the 19th century former cloth mills.

Bratton Camp

Westbury White Horse is perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in West Wiltshire. A perfect picnic spot, it has breathtaking views of the Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. The present White Horse was originally cut in 1778, however, legend suggests that it rests on the site of an even older horse that commemorated the defeat of the Danes by King Alfred at Ethandun in AD878. Bratton Camp is what remains of massive fortifications of a 2,000 year old Iron Age Hill fort. Its steep ditches and banks surround an even older Neolithic barrow or burial mound

Broadleas Gardens

Lady Anne Cowdray's beautiful valley garden which she bought in 1946 and has been creating and developing ever since the early sixties is an inspiration and a joy. The inspiration comes from the knowledge that much which has survived here might not have been expected to, and the joy is of discovery. For here are secret garden, winter garden, a woodland, a sunken rose garden and a silver border packed with plants which are unusual or rarely seen. Many are normally thought to be too tender for central southern England and more at home in the far west. There is a small nursery and amongst the plants for sale are many from the garden stock.
